It was time to take another pass on the hair cutting robot. The new robot is bigger, better, way more reliable and travel friendly. I tried to cut MatPats hair (live) then my brothers hair and then my own. For some reason I'm compelled to improve the pattern carving functionality even though I have zero desire to actually use it....
One final thing - if you know of any actual problems that could use a better solution please leave a comment. One of my goals is to make a portion of my projects attempts at solving legitimately useful problems and I would love to have a good list of them. Thanks!

  • Hi, I’m a professional barber and I believe I could help provide a lot of insight on how to improve the mechanics / outcome of you robot haircut! For starters, when creating a design on someone the shorter the surrounding hair the better! The length of hair on the sides of ur head when creating the “:/“ design was probably around 3/4 inch - 1inch. I’d say if you could cut the hair to around 1/8 - 3/16 inch the trimmer would have a much easier time cutting the design in, and it would also be a lot cleaner. That’s just 1 thing, but I think there’s a lot you could improve on with the actually process of cutting. For example which pattern the robot decides to move around the head in, or the angles the robot hold the clippers at. I have some ideas but it a bit long winded. If you see this and are interested in talking please reach out on HRworld or on Instagram @tfergfades

  • I believe people who lost a part of their body, like a hand, arm, legs, struggle so much to find something accessible for a reasonable price. I believe we are too attached to the concept of what an arm, hand, look like and not its purpose, so we try to mimic how a hand look. So create something that can make life easier for these kind of disabilities.

  • Idea for a real world problem. I was watching the Jerry Rig channel today and he was showing a wheel chair stair climber that by all means completes the task but... it is pretty JV. He outlines specifics that make the device good but also details 4 or 5 ideas that could make it next level. I firmly believe this is right in your wheel house.. I helped my wife’s grandfather up and down the stairs in his wheel chair and it is extremely dangerous and everyone watching is left helpless as there is only so much room to assist. Just a thought.. keep up the great work.. love your shop.

  • Don't give up on the hair cut robot just yet I have an idea.. Why don't you use some kind of camera like a kinect, that is attached to the robot arm and then have the robot run a cycle around your head to scan the existing hair before attempting to cut anything. It should get rid of all your issues of having hair not being cut in random spots 👌

  • I believe it is important to connect people. I am a guy that like to teach other people and like to learn new stuff. I am like an unknown person, that would only want to be seen by many people, just to teach them something or make the day better. I know there are platforms where you can teach or learn, but most of the time, you have to put a lot of work to teach someone (recording, Video cutting, preparing, ...) and/or need to pay, if you want something that really helps you. I started to learn programming Java some years ago, and it was hard to get the first steps done because many tutorials didn't explain it in a way, where I understand it and remember it. Sometimes it needs only a small project, where you can teach someone, while they help you with the project you wanted to do. It would be nice to have something that makes it easier to connect people that way. I know that you wanted an idea that could be done engineering, but I wanted to let that out, and maybe you think about it. I don't think that writing a Comment, 1 Month after the release of the video, would be seen, but I am in a mood to still leave a Comment.

    • We already have exo suits that could probably accomplish that, the difficulty is that they rely on the input of your limb motion to work. I know they have sensors that connect directly to your nerves, or can detect the signals from things like your spine, so theoretically you could hook it up that way depending on how your father is disabled (if it's based on an injury than you'd probably have to attach it above where are for the injury occurred)

  • HVAC systems are awful... and there have been several alternative, whole home cooling solutions presented here on HRworld. The solution of a single house vent pulling air through a water pump fed curtain of evaporative material looked so promising but still hasn't seen the light of day commercially. This vid is a very basic setup, but it shows the concept working from what I can see, and I always wanted to find a way to reproduce something deliverable that does exactly this.

  • You could place positional tracking dots on parts of the head/face. Similar to the way they do for motion capture on face actors. Then your 3d map of the head could be adjusted in real-time with the robot arm. You'd have to try to find places on the face that don't move much and require no expressions be made by the person. By using cameras all around your subject and motion capture markers, you could even make your arm hitting the head problem better. You'd be able to detect the position, and more importantly, the relative position of everything. I think they even make dots you can temporarily glue to the face that are active or passive positional trackers other than by optics. This could also solve the ear problem. I realize this is a far more complex design.

  • This was brilliant! It needs some further development that wasn't obvious. Maybe try ultrasonic sensors or laser positioning? How about IR cameras for position and skull shape referencing? There lots of options for head detection other than mechanical switches. I think if you can get the robot to learn the individual persons head and can adapt to movement of that head and can detect the head without physical contact, that reliability and consistency will increase.

For me on side projects that require special durability I use DIGI key and look for stuff with certain mil specs and rethink pin outs. Since I do DOT work that stuff is everyday for me I’m engineering, but for more consumer engineers I don’t come across a lot of them that know they could bullet proof their projects with stuff that is already designed and or specifically made for crude environments or high durability. I love going over kill on wire harnesses.
